- RELIX Presents: Terrapin Family Band ft Eric Krasno with special guest Melvin Seals – 8/5/2022
Terrapin Family Band
Using the Grateful Dead songbook as a springboard for reinterpretation and as inspiration to create original material, the musicians in the Terrapin Family Band are inspired as much by one another as they were by the diverse group of influences that they brought to the table. As a result, the music conveys friendship, respect, warmth, spontaneous conversation and companionship for listeners and performers alike.
Originally formed from shows at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, in 2012, the Terrapin Family Band began as the venue’s official house band. Terrapin Crossroads’ constant shows, often featuring Phil, created an opportunity for the musicians of Terrapin Crossroads to perform together and with a diverse cast of visiting musicians. Through playing in this setting, the band grew into a richly nuanced and fun group, weaving the classics with obscure covers and fresh original music to create a unique musical tapestry.
The band went through many editions throughout the years, but always lay on the foundation of Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Alex Koford & Jason Crosby. Around their prolific individual musical output, they would always come back together as members of the TFB. Beginning at the Brooklyn Bowl in late 2013 the band often featured Eric Krasno, as a guest, a friend, and now as a member of the band.
A communal bond brought the band members back together in 2022 – a real need to make music together again. Over time, the group’s music has developed organically, merging and fusing each musician’s influences into a hard-charging sound rooted in the communal/collective, telepathic, exploratory spirit of the Grateful Dead. This is a new twist on the band, and we are excited to see where it takes us.
What began as a house band for Phil’s Terrapin Crossroads has turned into something much more, and we’re excited to take the unique Terrapin Family Band sound into this next era as they explore new musical grounds.
Soulive and Lettuce co-founder, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter-producer Eric Krasno continues to evolve with each record, project, and performance. Something of a musical journeyman, his extensive catalog comprises three solo albums, four Lettuce albums, twelve Soulive albums, and production and/or songwriting for Norah Jones, Robert Randolph, Pretty Lights, Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. As a dynamic performer, he’s shared stages with Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, and The Roots. Out of seven nominations, he picked up two GRAMMY® Awards for his role as a songwriter and guitarist on Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Revelator and guitarist on Derek Trucks Band’ Already Free. In 2019, he served up Telescope under the KRAZ moniker. The cinematic concept album earned widespread acclaim from the likes of Relix and Salon who hailed it as “a timely New York story.” On his 2021 fourth full-length solo offering Always, he defines himself as not only an artist, but also as a husband, father, and man across these ten tracks with inimitable instrumentation, eloquent songcraft, and raw honesty.
Melvin Seals is best known for his long friendship and musical partnership with cultural icon and guitarist Jerry Garcia and the smile of his that lights up the room. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”.
