“Hayes & The Heathens” does not mean Hayes Carll with “opening act” The Band of Heathens or the other way around. It means ONE hellaciously talent-stacked band from downbeat to encore, fronted by three acclaimed singer-songwriters (Carll and The Heathens’ Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist), armed to the teeth with guitars, swagger, and some of the most irresistible American rock ‘n’ roll, folk, country, and soulful blues anthems of the last two decades.Far from coming out of nowhere, Hayes & The Heathens is a union born out of years from mutual respect. Their respective award-winning careers have run parallel and criss-crossed many times, most recently back in October of 2023, when Carll and The Heathens shared a freewheeling family jam in Luckenbach, Texas.“We had such a blast collaborating and playing together out in Luckenbach, that we wanted to take this on the road and share it with more people,” says Quist.

Whether through combining their celebrated catalogs, writing and recording new music, or reinterpreting their favorite musical works by others…There’s a whole lotta roots-rocking funky coolness coming your way. The kind gets exponentially cooler when two of the scrappiest and most respected acts to ever tumble out of Texas — Hayes Carll and The Band of Heathens — join forces.“We’ve played a lot of music together over the last 10 years,” says Carll, “and our creative relationship continues to evolve into its own thing. Hayes & The Heathens is that thing.”“This sort of medicine show, revival, rock and roll circus is a unique presentation of our music,” adds Jurdi. “I think anyone who loves the spontaneity and chemistry of a live performance is going to be in for a magical evening. I know we’re going to have a good time!”And whether that magical good-time lasts for one quick fling or continues to evolve into who knows what more down the road, this much is a given: The collective stomp and holler of Hayes & The Heathens is gonna be righteous.

Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B- 3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become "Jam Band Music". From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up. Melvin and JGB bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. John Kadlecik on lead guitar and vocal duties, John-Paul McLean's savory bass, Jeremy Hoenig on the drums and, of course, a heapin' helpin' of the wizard's magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours.

Adding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him "Master of the Universe". Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself!

Jackie Greene

Click Here for Jackie Greene's Youtube

Americana and roots singer-songwriter Jackie Greene is a jack-of-all-trades, and an artist who can croon over soulful piano ballads as much as he can shred a bluesy guitar solo (like he did as the lead guitarist for The Black Crowes in 2013). A road warrior and musician’s musician, Greene’s new EP ‘The Modern Lives - Vol 2’ (out October 2018 on Blue Rose Music) finds him at a new chapter in his life: his first months of fatherhood, time off his relentless touring circuit, and a cross-country move from Brooklyn to his birthplace of Northern California.

This new collection of six original songs is a thematic extension of ‘The Modern Lives - Vol 1’ EP (released in 2017 on Blue Rose Music), imbued with a Brooklyn basement DIY feel and ethos. He is a student of American music, transfixed upon its progression through time, as well as how regional sounds fit in a contemporary context. Whereas ‘Vol 1’ saw Greene experiment with the Delta blues as a canvas for his examinations of modern society, ‘Vol 2’ sees Greene embrace the sounds of the bluegrass and folk tapes of his youth.

An Evening with The Lettermen

The Lettermen Spotify

The Lettermen Website

The Lettermen The world may define harmony as a combination of musical sounds considered to be pleasing. The Lettermen define harmony as Lettermenizing. Since the groups inception The Lettermen have always taken a current song of the day and put their 3-part harmony to it which is called Lettermenizing a song. Donovan Tea, Bobby Poynton and Rob Gulack, each of whom are entertainers in their own right, have kept the meaning of harmony alive with their soft, romantic, harmonic blend of music which is as popular with their fans today as it was in 1961 when The Lettermen recorded their first hit, “The Way You Look Tonight”.

For The Lettermen debut single record in the summer of 1961, Capitol Records decided to put a romantic ballad on the B-side of “That’s My Desire”, which was an attempt at a doo-wop single, figuring radio stations would have to play the A-side because the B-side was so sweet, and slow, and did not necessarily encompass the commercial sound of the day. The B-side was “The Way You Look Tonight”. Soft, melodic and romantic, it was a departure from the rock ‘n’ roll music of the day. Eventually, listener requests made it a must for radio station play lists nationwide. The song shot to No. 13, on the Billboard chart. The group’s second single that year did even better. “When I Fall In Love,” another soft, slow ballad hit No.7, establishing The Lettermen as the most romantic singing group of a generation.

The Lettermen have recorded over 75 albums - eighteen gold records internationally – and a myriad of hits including “When I Fall In Love”, “Goin’ Out Of My Head/Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” and “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” to name just a few. They continue to perform interesting, updated arrangements of several classics such as “The Way You Tonight” and “Theme From A Summer Place”. While always honoring their roots, audiences are showing a resounding love for the “Letterminized” new arrangements of “Never Enough” from the mega-hit The Greatest Showman, “Sugar” Medley (“I Can’t Help Myself”, “Sugar”, “How Sweet It Is”) and “Happy” Medley (“Happy”, “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”, “Happy Together”). These talented individuals interestingly play with the harmonies on songs like “Suspicious Minds”, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” and “Over The Rainbow”. Their amazing vocals continually swoop over one another, mesmerizing audiences all over the world.

The one constant that has remained through the years is the unique three-part harmony as only The Lettermen can achieve. Though musical tastes have changed over the years, The Lettermen legacy continues. Harmony will always endure the true test of time - just as The Lettermen have stood the test of time.

The Guild Theatre and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Present - Haley Heynderickx

Indie folk singer/songwriter Haley Heynderickx draws from a wide array of influences, citing her religious Filipino-American upbringing, the folk music of the 1960s and ’70s, jazz radio, and the idiosyncratic acoustic guitar styles of Leo Kottke and John Fahey. All of those ingredients find their way into her music, which pairs deft fingerpicking with lyrics that flirt with levity but hew toward introspection. Her first album I Need to Start a Garden saw release in 2018. Following years of heavy touring, Heynderickx has new music coming this year.

LéPonds is the solo project of Lisa Houdei, an experimental folk singer-songwriter based in Topanga Canyon, just north of Los Angeles. Her vocal approaches are haunting, angelic, and whimsical– with song styles akin to Vashti Bunyan and Norma Tanega. Her music is original, organic, and effortlessly beautiful. With four albums released, you will find many treasures– some, unexpected. She has opened for artists such as Jeff Tweedy, Natalie Prass, Black Belt Eagle Scout & has recently supported Haley Heynderickx on tour.

Through compelling songs and charismatic performances, singer-songwriter RIVVRS radiates an endearing and optimistic vision; his music connects the authenticity of Folk & Americana with the accessibility of pop. His debut single “I Will Follow You” reached #3 on the iTunes Charts in 2016, leading to support slots with artists such as Jewel, Snow Patrol, and Nathaniel Rateliff, in addition to a series of successful US Headline tours and a main stage performance at Bottlerock Music Festival in Napa. His songs have since garnered more than 100 million streams and 100+ features across TV & Film (including shows Suits, Lucifer, Bates Motel, and a National Ad Campaign for Reebok).

In 2019, RIVVRS left the city lights of Los Angeles for a simple life in the countryside of the Foothills, where he now resides with his wife and animals on a 5-acre homestead. With his 5th Album, “Sunlight of the Spirit”, RIVVRS returns to his Americana roots with a compilation of raw and vulnerable songs about the struggles that come with addiction, recovery, and spiritual discovery. Self-produced at his home in Nevada County & mixed by Grammy-nominated producer, Andrew Berlin (Gregory Alan Isakov’s ‘Evening Machines’), the album is due for release Fall 2024.

Modern English

Click here for Modern English Spotify

Click here for Modern English Website

Modern English is a paragon of consistency. Formed in Colchester, Essex, England, the band has maintained the same core lineup since 1977: vocalist Robbie Grey, guitarist Gary McDowell, bassist Mick Conroy, and keyboardist Stephen Walker. In recent years, Modern English has become widely respected as post-punk innovators, thanks to younger generations discovering their catalog and new artists citing the band as an influence. This increased popularity has translated to sold-out tours performing their early albums and a main stage appearance at the 2023 Cruel World Festival in front of more than 25,000 people. Modern English’s new album, ‘1 2 3 4’ – produced by Mario McNulty (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails), mixed by Cenzo Townsend, and mastered at Abbey Road – retains the intrinsic spirit of these early, post-punk days and is also a sterling sonic example of what Modern English have always done best.

The album encompasses seething songs with punk bite (“Long in The Tooth,” “Plastic”), keyboard-forward melodic rockers (“Not Fake,” “Crazy Lovers”), and simmering, darkwave-meets-post-punk gems (“Exploding,” “Out to Lunch”). The band’s keen sense of dynamics is also evident throughout ‘1 2 3 4’. The album-closing “Voices” is particularly subdued, bolstered by echoing, Doppler-like sound effects and Grey’s somber vocals; the effect falls somewhere between spacey psychedelic rock and tranquil shoegaze.

Hiss Golden Messenger Solo Plays "Bad Debt" and other favorites

Click here for Hiss Golden Messenger Spotify

Click here for Hiss Golden Messenger Website

In 2010, M.C. Taylor—leader, songwriter and singer of Hiss Golden  Messenger—sat down at his kitchen table and started writing and recording  the songs that would eventually become his beloved album Bad Debt. At  the time, the songwriter was living in a drafty cedar cabin in the woods  outside of Pittsboro, North Carolina with his wife and three-month old son  Elijah, having recently moved across the country from California. Taylor  was, for all intents and purposes, out of the music game.

While his child slept, Taylor wrote and sang his finished compositions into a  cassette tape recorder, voice and guitar in the same intimate moment. As  songs began to coalesce—intimate meditations on labor and joy and love  and the heartbreaking, confounding fullness of life—Taylor shared them  with his closest friends, feeling as though he had found something special.  He had 200 copies of the album pressed on vinyl, created the artwork  himself, and sold them out of the trunk of his car. When those copies sold,  he pressed and sold another 200. These early, hand-wrought versions  have become sought-after relics.

Bad Debt was the name Taylor gave to the deep and vulnerable collection  of songs he wrote at his kitchen table; it went on to be profiled in the New  Yorker, the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Uncut Magazine, and many  other publications, paving the way for Hiss Golden Messenger's critically  acclaimed, Grammy-nominated career.

In the fall of 2024, Taylor will play a series of solo shows during which he  will perform Bad Debt in its entirety, in addition to songs from the rest of his  celebrated catalog. Keep your ear to the ground.

About the Show and the Artist:

Palo Alto Jazz Alliance Presents: The Sarah McKenzie Quartet

Sarah McKenzie is a 36-year old jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, and bandleader whose breezy technical style, songwriting acumen, and pronounced lyrical sense of swing have drawn comparisons to influences Blossom Dearie, Shirley Horn, Diana Krall, Nat King Cole, and Harry Connick, Jr. and the way "they all tell stories through their singing" which evoke emotions and are meant to touch people.

McKenzie was born in Australia and began playing piano at the age of five.  She recalls that by the age of 15 she heard Oscar Peterson's 'Night Train' and that it was a turning point for her, because after hearing that "happy music" she "knew what she wanted to do ...  with my life."  She also loved pianists Gene Harris and Ahmad Jamal.  She participated several times in the 'Generations in Jazz' development program, which she consequently won, and which led to performances with Australian Jazz superstar James Morrison, who mentored her.

She attended Perth's Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and graduated with a Bachelor of Jazz degree, won the Jack Bendat Scholarship, the Hawaiian Award for "Most Outstanding Jazz Graduate, and also won a spot as a backing vocalist on Michael Buble's 'Call Me Irresponsible' tour.  She signed with ABC Records and cut her first recording for the label in 2011. Entitled 'Don't Tempt Me', it included classic pop, blues, and jazz tunes as well as originals. The attention it garnered won her an opening slot for Chris Botti's tour that year.

In 2012, McKenzie released her sophomore effort, 'Close Your Eyes', to universal acclaim and spread her reputation beyond Australia's shores. It won the 'Best Jazz Album 'ARIA' award' (Australia's equivalent to the Grammy), and earned her support slots on the tours of Enrico Rava and John Patitucci. That same year she won a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she studied with Joanne Brackeen and earned an Artist's Diploma in Jazz Performance. While at Berklee she had the opportunity to perform her own work at Boston Symphony Hall, Umbria Jazz's Winter and Summer festivals (Italy), Jazz Ahead in Bremen (Germany), the Monterey Jazz Festival (USA) and several smaller festivals in Italy.

Upon graduating from Berklee College of Music, Sarah remained in the United States and settled in Los Angeles. Her third album, 'We Could Be Lovers', was released in Australia in late 2014. Given its positive critical reception and her growing profile on North American stages, the album was picked up by Universal Music's imprint 'Impulse!' for worldwide distribution and was released on August 15, 2015 in the rest of the world.

In early 2016 Universal Music Publishing’s legendary producer Jean-Phillip Allard signed her as composer with an exclusive 5 year contract and she became a member of the French royalty collection system SACEM and relocated to Paris.  In January 2017 Impulse! released McKenzie's follow up album 'Paris in the Rain', which she toured over the next two years around the world performing at hundreds of festivals, e.g. in Montreux, Montreal, Monterey, CA, Stuttgart, Vienne, Marciac, but also went to places as distant as Japan, Russia, China, Taiwan and Brazil.

In 2018 the Diablo Regional Arts Association in Walnut Creek, CA commissioned McKenzie to compose and perform a full concert length concert program titled 'San Francisco - Paris of the West' which tells the story of the Verdier family and their influence on San Francisco over the centuries. Sarah was able to engage the very best musicians on the US Jazz scene to accompany her on this project, which was recorded at Los Angeles' famous Capitol Recording Studios.

By then Sarah had relocated to London and in March of that year she released her next album 'Secrets of My Heart' on the Normandy Lane Music label. Once again she toured the world until the coronavirus pandemic outbreak stopped all touring in March 2020.

The DRAA in Walnut Creek, CA, gave Sarah another commission entitled 'Music Connects Our World' a video extravaganza of 60 minutes length, filmed remotely, in which she collaborates with other artists from around the world and performs songs together with them.  Those videos have been viewed by over 7 million people worldwide.

One of the first of those videos followed time spent in Brazil where she was the opening act at the grand opening of the Blue Note club in Rio de Janeiro and was embraced by the local Bossa Nova community.  It was a collaboration with new friends Jacques Morelenbaum, the original cellist of Tom Jobim’s band, and Romero Lubambo, for some years the guitarist of Astrud Gilberto.  They recorded a version of ‘Corcovado’, which became an internet hit. This success encouraged the three of them to record an entire Brazilian themed album, ‘Without You’ (Normandy Lane), which was released in late October 2023 and also featured Peter Erskine on drums, Rogerio Boccato on percussion, and Bob Sheppard on sax.  The album received great critical acclaim all across the world:  ‘Audiophile Album of the Month’ (Audio+Stereoplay in Germany), ’Album of the Week’ (SR Radio in Germany, Jazziz Magazine in the USA, JazzFM in the UK), ‘Disque Du Jour’ (TSF Jazz in France), ’Song of the Day’ (KCRW and Jazziz Magazine in the USA).  And one more time Sarah McKenzie toured the world with performances in London, Paris, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Vienna, Warsaw, Melbourne, Sydney, Venice, Milano and many more.

On October 20, 2024, our audience will be privileged to attend the concert by the Sarah McKenzie Quartet at the Guild Theatre.

Composer/multi-media artist Micah Nelson has a remarkable output that spans the creative spectrum unlike few others. The visionary, who Rolling Stone magazine hailed as one of their “New Classics” (“The creative visionaries celebrated here come from the worlds of music, acting, comedy, sports and more. …they share a refusal to be contained by the rules of the past as they define the territory of the future”), produces art under the moniker Particle Kid and finds no boundaries in his creativity.

Particle Kid has released six albums of his original music, including his most recent release Time Capsule, a 26-song musical journey through time, space, and consciousness. It features guest appearances from Jim James, Sean Ono Lennon, J Mascis, Margo Price, The Lovely Eggs, and Micah’s dad Willie Nelson on three tracks including "Die When I'm High (Halfway to Heaven).” His previous albums – self-titled debut Particle Kid, Everything Is Bullshit, Particle War, Window Rock, Live! Underground – are just part of the catalog of work Nelson has amassed with other artists and musicians. He was chosen by Neil Young to become a member of his band Crazy Horse in 2023, and Nelson was also been featured in Young's full-length film Paradox. For Record Store Day in 2018, he released Lucky Wheel, a split 12" vinyl collaboration with punk legend and X co-founder John Doe. He created the cover art on Willie’s recent studio album First Rose of Spring. (Willie coined Micah “Particle Kid,” when he misspoke a “prodigal son” greeting.)

On tour year round, Particle Kid has headlined shows around the world as well as opened for many other artists including The Flaming
Lips, Tinariwen, Meat Puppets, Claypool Lennon Delirium, and been part of the line up for Luck Reunion, BottleRock Festival, UTOPiAfest, and the Outlaw Music Festival.

Based in Northern California, the Hips headed to New Mexico, spending time at Ghost Ranch before settling in at Jono Manson’s Kitchen Sink studio in Sante Fe for sessions in late 2021. Self-produced, When We Disappear features nine new tracks co-written by co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono — collection of lit-psych rock songs Inspired by psychology and literature — as well as a raw, garagey cover of Buffy St. Marie’s 1964 addiction song “Codine.”

“Greg [Loiacono, co-founder) sent me a rough demo of this song and I thought it was promising,” says Hips co-founder Tim Bluhm of “When We Disappear.” “What he was singing was place-holder gibberish, or sounds mixed with some actual lyrics, including what would become the title. I went through it and matched words to his sounds and then tweaked the words to tell a kind of impressionistic history of our adventures together. In this way I believe both Greg’s and my own subconscious worlds revealed themselves.

The music is simple and loose, helping with the devil-may-care attitude of the singing.” Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits,” The Mother Hips’ headline and festival performances have became the stuff of legend, finding them sharing stages with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Rolling Stone called the band “divinely inspired,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70’s rock and power pop,” and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.”

The Hooks Bio:

The Hooks are one of the most exciting bands in San Francisco at the moment. The Irish transplants have made the bay area their home. The Hooks released their first album on vinyl “Everything Is Golden” with much interest from Japan, The US and Europe. “The Hooks…are a magical charged-up power pop exemplified by their self-released EP “10,000 Feet”. It's loaded with bright, dueling guitars.” Duncan Scott Davidson – SF Chronicle Anthemic Irish balladeers, the name says it all: they have the hooks (and the looks) indeed, and in spades. With a nod to the Kinks, and the Clash, their joyful, bratty call to arms is infectious and stays with you long after that last Guinness has been quaffed”.“ “The Hooks forge their own galloping new hybrid of Irish…they do not disappoint, and sound fresh and original”. The Hooks have cultivated a new sound for their forthcoming album ‘Social Climbing’ Recorded at famed Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. The album is a hook-laden extrospective comment on todays world containing a myriad of colors and sounds. This multi-format release is available now from all great outlets. We've just released our latest album "Social Climbing" recorded @ Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA.

Their creations have artistically inspired people and their mind-blowing live performances have brought people together to form a special sense of community around the love for their favorite band. Although the music from each act is different, Pink Talking Fish has discovered that fusing the material together creates an amazing story.

The epic emotion of Pink Floyd...The funky, danceable layerings of The Talking Heads... The multitude of styles, unique
compositional structures and pure fun of Phish... to merge these three into one gives music lovers a special experience. Discovering connections is part of the fun: Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" seamlessly fitting in the middle of the composition of Phish's "You Enjoy Myself". Perfectly placing Phish's "Sand" into the groove of The Talking Heads "Slippery People". Segued collections from all three acts such as Run Like Hell > Making Flippy Floppy > Piper > Run Like Hell or Mike's Song > Have A Cigar > Once In A Lifetime > Weekapaug Groove. These ideas are the spirit behind Pink Talking Fish.

The story is ever evolving. The experience is always exciting. Come join Pink Talking Fish for the ultimate fusion tribute and celebrate the love of this music in unique fashion

In this life, very few friendships withstand the test of time. Naturally, people go their separate ways and chase their own dreams. As rare as it may be for friendships to last a lifetime, it might be even rarer for a band to stick together for the long haul. For close to four decades, the members of Big Head Todd and The Monsters—Todd Park Mohr [vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica], Brian Nevin [drums], Rob Squires [bass, vocals], and Jeremy Lawton [keyboards, lap pedal/steel guitar, vocals]—have continued to both throw down in the studio and light up stages worldwide. Rallying around a core vision, the platinum-selling Colorado quartet kick out the kind of blues-drenched rock ‘n’ roll bangers that make you want to rev the engine a little louder, sing along like no one’s looking, and live a little freer.

This holds true on their 12th full-length offering, Her Way Out.

“To me, my band means four people who listen to each other, work hard, and share a goal,” Todd observes. “The goal has to do with reaching out to people, catching their ears, and sharing a story we hope they relate to. Our fans have given us an incredible 40-year career, and we hope they’ve gotten great songs and performances in return.”

About the Show and the Artist:

Kathleen Edwards (DUO)

Click here for Kathleen Edwards Spotify

For decades, Kathleen Edwards has been a cornerstone of North American roots music.

Since making her debut with 2002's Failer, she's spent the 21st century occupying the grey area between genres, swirling together her own mix of alt-country, folk, and heartland rock & roll. It's a sound that has earned its creator more a half-dozen Juno nominations, as well as Top 40 success on both sides of the Canadian/American border. Now in her third decade as an artist, Kathleen Edwards has done more than carry the torch of songwriting heroes like Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Lucinda Williams — she's opened the door for others, too, inspiring a new generation of artists who, like her, blur the boundaries between genre and generation.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Edwards was still in her early 20s when she released the critically-acclaimed Failer. The album's warm, woozy sound — crystallized on radio hits like "Six O'Clock News" — quickly turned her into one of the era's alt-country heroes. From the very start, though, Edwards' music seemed to exist somewhere out of time, resisting categorization even as Failer received a Juno nomination for "Roots & Traditional Album of the Year."

"No one knew what to call my type of music back then," she says of those early years. "The Americana genre didn't exist yet, so they couldn't categorize me. I just made the kind of music I wanted to make."

Edwards continued blazing her own trail with follow-up albums like Back to Me and Asking for Flowers. By the time Voyageur arrived in 2012, Americana very much did exist as a genre, and Edwards found herself riding a newfound commercial peak. The album reached Number 2 on the Canadian Albums Chart and Number 3 on Billboard's Folk Albums chart. Even so, a busy decade on the road had left her exhausted. After touring in support of Voyageur's release, Edwards left the music business altogether and moved to suburban Ontario, where she opened a coffee shop called — defiantly — "Quitters."

"Before I turned 30, I toured the world and put our nearly four records, performed on TV, and had an incredible run," she says of her first 10 years in the spotlight. "What's interesting is that I walked away from all of it, too — and when I came back, I felt better than the person who put out Failer."

By the late 2010s, Edwards felt recharged and revitalized. When a phone call arrived from Maren Morris, who was looking for songwriting partners for a new project, Edwards jumped at the chance to collaborate. The two musicians co-wrote "Good Woman," which appeared on Morris' Grammy-nominated album Girl in 2019. Back home in Canada, Edwards continued to write new material, eventually partnering with producer Ian Fitchuk for the album Total Freedom. Released in 2020, the album expanded her sound and her audience, boosted by two hit songs — "Options Open" and "Hard on Everyone" — that both reached the Top 30 on the Triple A chart in America. Total Freedom didn't just mark her return to the music industry. It was a rebirth, too.

What's next? New music, of course. Edwards remains a fan of "ripping guitar riffs and good songs," and she's combining both into a follow-up album that showcases her legacy as well as her evolution. She maintains a presence on the road, too, playing her own gigs one minute and sharing shows with her heroes — including Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, and Bob Dylan — the next.

"The amount of things I've gone through might make someone else quit…but quitting doesn't quite do it for me," she says. "I can't help but want to write great songs, connect with people, and see what's ahead. I don't love looking behind, even though it's one of the ways we can see what we've done, so I'm looking forward."

Lucero

The search for one’s identity is a lifelong process that every individual must go through. Who someone is today, is not the person they were yesterday nor who they may be tomorrow. Despite those changes, there is a general idea of a defined sense of self.  No matter what happens, it is that small yet solid and grounding definition of self that continues to drive us forward in our search for identity and whatever may come with it. It would be difficult to find any artist who understands that better than the band Lucero. Since forming in Memphis in the late 90’s, Lucero’s base musical hallmarks have remained similar to the band’s initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes. In the his- tory of their expansive discography, Lucero has evolved and embraced everything from southern rock to Stax-inspired Memphis soul, whilst simultaneously maintaining their distinctive sonic foundations. Over 20 years later, dedicated fans of the group still flock to hear the band’s punchy driving rhythms, punk-rooted guitar licks, and lyrics that evoke the whiskey drenched sentimen- tality of Americana singer-songwriters. As expected of any band built to survive, Lucero has welcomed change over the course of their career, but it has always been on their terms. The band’s twelfth album, Should’ve Learned by Now, began its life as hardly more than some rough demos and lingering guitar parts.

These pieces that were left behind from the band’s previous albums, Among the Ghosts (2018) and When You Found Me (2021) were deemed too uptempo and capering for the prior records’ darker themes. “I had a particular sound I was looking for on each record and there was no room for any goofy rock & roll or cute witticisms or even simply upbeat songs,” said primary lyricist and frontman, Ben Nichols. “But now finally, it was time to revisit all of that stuff and get it out in the world. That’s how we got to the appropriately-for-us-titled album Should’ve Learned by Now. The album is basically about how we know we are fuckups and I guess we are ok with that.” The band, comprised of all its original members (which in addition to Ben Nichols, includes Brian Venable on guitar, Roy Berry on drums, John C. Stubblefield on bass, and Rick Steff on keys) teamed up for a third time with producer and Grammy Award-winning engineer and mixer, Matt Ross-Spang. Lucero began the recording process in Sam Phillips Recording Service before transitioning and finishing the record in Ross-Spang’s newly opened Southern Grooves Produc- tions in Memphis, TN. Ross-Spang appears to have settled in with the band’s more trademark sound whilst very much making his touch known to listeners. “He knows how to take the sounds we’re making on our own and just kind of polish them up in the right way. Or dirty it up in the right way. Whatever it takes, he just kind of does it,” says Nichols. The first track from the album “One Last F.U.” is a punchy and somewhat combative song which was one of the original remnants of Among the Ghosts.

Despite its title, “One Last F.U.” is less about standoffishness and more a self-reflection on the kind of people we are capable of be- ing in difficult situations. According to Nichols “The rest of the song was simply about wanting to be left alone while I drank at the bar. That could be taken in a kind of grumpy/antagonistic way, but I feel ok singing the song because I’ve been both characters in the song at different times. Sometimes I’m the one wanting to be left alone and sometimes I’m the drunk one blab- bing all night to someone that just wants to be left alone.” Right off the bat, Nichols’ vocals are awash in rock and roll slap-back reverb. The effect pushes Nichols' naturally upfront vocals wi- der, so they fill the space in a manner more akin to a live performance. It’s one of a few new pro- duction effects that extend throughout the record and add a new level of presence and attitude to the band’s sound. The second track, “Macon if We Make It”, was inspired by the band having to traverse through Georgia during a hurricane. When asked where the next stop on the tour was, the band responded with, “Macon, if we make it.” Continuing to be reminiscent of older works, “Macon if We Make It” has echoes of the band’s 2009 album 1372 Overton Park. The song is really driven by guitarist Brian Venable’s formidable electric guitar. The lyrics seem at first to be mostly pre- occupied with a literal storm situation at hand but turn out to be more about a troubled relation- ship back home. The proverbial dam breaks when the narrator sings “I don’t know if we were in love. I just know it wasn’t enough. Got caught in the storm and the water it’s rising...” The song gives way to a powerful drum lead up by Roy Berry and the listener is carried out, like a raft, on a ripping guitar solo.

The pushes and pulls, builds and breakdowns are all over the album’s subsequent tracks, but it isn’t all hard-edged rock and roll all the time. “She Leads Me”, is inspired somewhat by the classic tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, and delves into a softer and more nostalgic sound. With backing vocals supplied by Jesse Davis and Cory Branan, it’s a song that lyrically rests on the concept that we sometimes need to recognize and acknowledge our past for a gentle enough reas- surance to move forward. The rest of the album dives right back into its more rock and roll songs with “At the Show” and “Nothing’s Alright”, both of which examine the highs and lows of remembering old loves, reminiscing on the old days, and contented introspection. Aspects which finally come to a head in the album’s title track “Should’ve Learned by Now”, a rough and edgy song that tackles the fact that all the lessons, though clearly recognized, have yet to sink in. Quite poetically, the song is set to a tune that may be the greatest call back to Lucero’s punk upbringing. From its original Ben Nichols-designed cover art to its credits, the album is a reflection of a band that knows itself. Should’ve Learned by Now bridges the gap musically between “old Lucero” and “new Lucero” in a manner which affixes the band’s position as the perfect intersec- tion of punk initiative with hard-earned artistry. It’s an album that recognizes the past in its sound and content, but leaves the door wide open to the future and for the lessons still in store

Hailing from a quaint town in Co. Cork, Ireland, Darren Kiely’s folk-infused pop sound originates from his inherited love of traditional Irish music, intertwined with modern influences such as The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, and Noah Kahan. At just five years old, Darren learned the tin whistle, and at eight years old he picked up the fiddle, eventually teaching himself to play guitar as well. Darren began singing in 2019, quickly garnering attention for his raw and fervent vocals and emotive delivery. After winning numerous honors at a national level in Irish traditional music, Darren found his way to NYC in 2022 to continue developing his own music and sound, and soon after headed to the songwriting hub of Nashville.

Darren’s unique presentation of folk-infused pop and lush storytelling, which echoes the backdrop of the Irish countryside where he was raised, is the forefront of his debut EP, Lost, which arrived last fall. The seven-track project explores the triumphant war of overcoming self-doubt, struggling to find himself, questioning emotions and seeking answers. Lost features new track “Mom & Dad,” which debuted in the Top 40 on the Irish Singles Chart and also landed him in the Top 5 on the Irish Homegrown chart, as well as fan-favorite “Sunrise.” Kiely took his new music on the road in the fall with his headline THE ROAD HOME TOUR, where he sold out shows across his home country of Ireland. Following his headline tour, Kiely toured across Europe with the 502s. The singer is currently on his headline North American tour, THE LOST TOUR.

At the forefront of legendary Rock and Roll bands, you are sure to find Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. In early 2003, Petty Theft was born as a classic rock cover band, performing all around the San Francisco Bay Area to great responses and growing audiences. It became clear that this project should focus on the great music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and quickly progressed to regular touring in and out of the Bay Area and out of California. Petty Theft has the same lineup of six musicians as the legendary Heartbreakers and they perform Tom Petty’s songs true to the originals, in the spirit of the Heartbreaker’s live shows.

For over 35 years, alt-rock icons Better Than Ezra have maintained a direct line to the unbridled joy of making music, endlessly dreaming up songs with an uncanny power to linger forever in the listener’s heart. Since the arrival of their breakthrough album Deluxe—a platinum-selling LP featuring their era-defining smash hit “Good”—the New Orleans-bred band’s bittersweet but quick-witted songwriting and supremely catchy sound have led to triumphs like landing on Billboard’s “100 Greatest Alternative Artists of All Time” and “100 Greatest Alternative Songs of All Time” lists, building an adoring following who call themselves Ezralites, and achieving major pop-culture milestones like getting name-checked in a classic skit on Saturday Night Live. Their first album in a decade, Super Magick ultimately sets Better Than Ezra apart from legions of legacy acts and reveals a band more enchanted than ever with the sublime alchemy of truly heartfelt rock-and-roll.

John 5

For almost 30 years, John 5 has been one of the most in-demand guitar players on the planet. As well as a guitarist for hire, 5 has shared the stage as axe-man for Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and Rob Halford. He has also worked with an impressive array of names, from all walks of music, including KD Lang, Rod Stewart, Dave Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Tina Guo and Steven Adler.

To call John 5 a shredder does not do him justice. There’s little he can’t put his hand to.  John 5 was born John William Lowery, on July 31st 1970, in Gross Pointe Michigan. His love of guitar began at age seven, when he began watching the Hee Haw series with his father. “I watched the guitar playing and knew that was what I wanted to do. My friends wanted to be astronauts and such but all I wanted to do was play and play and play”. Other notable influences included KISS and Jimi Hendrix.

John 5’s solo career turned out not to be a flash in the pan, and he has now released 9 studio albums, a live album and a remix album . He has worked with several special guests on those albums, including Albert Lee who called John 5 “ one of the nicest guys I’ve worked with“, Steve Vai who called John “ underrated”, Joe Satriani, Jim Root, Eric Johnson and many more. As well as his solo albums John 5 teamed up with the vocal talents of Joe Grah (formerly of Texas band Jibe) to form “radio rock project” Loser. Their first single, ‘Disposable Sunshine’ featured on the Fantastic Four soundtrack.

In 2006, John 5 was invited to join Rob Zombie for a short Ozzfest tour. Despite being told “Not to get too comfortable”, the pairing brought a resurgence in Zombie, who at the point was turning his hand to directing movies and taking a break from music, they began work on 2006’s

‘Educated Horses’. As a consequence John 5 had to make the decision to leave his fledgling band Loser. “Being the founding member of Loser, my decision to leave was not an easy one.”

In 2015, following a series of web shows to celebrate the release of his solo album ‘Careful With That Axe”, John 5 decided to take his solo set on tour, and formed The Creatures band to support his live shows. Initially joined by long-term friend Rodger Carter on drums, the band continues touring to this day, and now work as a unit on 5’s solo albums, including ‘Season Of The Witch’,the live album ‘It’s Alive’ and 2019’s ‘Invasion’. The current line-up includes John 5, Ian Ross on bass and drummer Logan Miles Nix.

Although John 5 does less “hired gun” work, he has contributed to work with Lynryd Skynrd, Meatloaf, Ricky Martin, Rod Stewart, Motley Crue and Rod Stewart. “I’m busy, constantly busy with work but I look at who I am in the studio with or sending music to and I think I don’t ever want it to stop.

One night in the middle of the night there were a series of noises coming from above which lead to a series of thoughts. It sounded like something was working. Building something.. A nest for its family? A trap for its prey? This led to more thoughts about unseen things at work. A God? A voice in your head? It all feels kind of made up until someone responds to it.Less means more. That’s kind of always how it’s been with us. This time the rules were simple: we can only use what we work with live and whatever we put down on tape must be accomplishable on a stage in a live setting. That’s always seemed to be when we’re at our best. Or most twitchy. Many times we’ve made records that we loved and then, after figuring out how we’d perform it live, we end up falling in love with the live arrangement because being a 2 piece band it took some real risk and struggle which led to innovation which gave it a whole new life. (Consider the tortured grape.) So with this one we just started there and worked backwards. The result encapsulates, more than anything we’ve done before, the sound of our live performance. Resulting in what one might consider by definition, a definitive album.

Opener: Al Olender

Al Olender's Website

Al Olender's Spotify

There’s nothing scarier than being honest with yourself. For singer/songwriter Al Olender, facing her fear of the truth has been a cleansing, often cathartic process that’s led to the kind of revelations she had previously thought unobtainable. On her debut full-length album Easy Crier, the Upstate New York based artist asks: what happens if we vow to never tell a lie, ever again? Charting the daunting territories of staring your demons right in the face and prodding at the ugly parts of your reflection, Olender pieces together her most vulnerable moments to produce a celebratory and beautiful rumination on grief, and reminds us of the power that comes in really getting to know yourself.

The catalyst for this renewed outlook stems from the sudden loss of her older brother. As a huge supporter of Olender’s musical talents from the very beginning, he would often invite his friends over and encourage a then-teenage Olender to play her “angsty love songs” for them. “Everything that I do musically revolves around my brother,” she says. “It’s like every single thing I do in my life – my brother is so much in the front of my mind.”
