About the Show and the Artist:

Doors 6:30 PM // Event 7 PM

You’re invited to celebrate with us the release of Righting Wrongs, the insightful new memoir by Kenneth (Ken) Roth, former Executive Director of Human Rights Watch. For over three decades, Ken Roth led the organization’s efforts to expose human rights abuses around the world, confronting autocrats and oppressive regimes. In his book, Ken recounts his personal experiences investigating atrocities in over 100 countries - from the genocide in Rwanda to the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar - and reflects on his mission to hold governments accountable for their actions.

In a special conversation at this event, Ken will be joined by the current Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, Tirana Hassan, as they discuss the evolution of human rights advocacy, the strategies that have shaped their work, and the continued fight for justice in a changing world.

This event is a unique opportunity to engage with two of the foremost leaders in the global human rights movement and to gain a deeper understanding of the issues at the heart of Righting Wrongs

Event graciously sponsored by HRW supporters. Thank you!

For event-related questions, please reach out to Yuki Nishimura (nishimy@hrw.org).

Yachtley Crew are a seven-piece SoCal band who burst onto the club scene in 2017, selling out countless local venues before starting a nationwide Yacht Rock craze and being noticed by the legendary Jimmy Buffett, who signed them to his own Mailboat label prior to their new deal with Earache/Universal Records.

The nautical-suited and captain's-hat-clad Yachtley Crew (also known as "The Titans of Soft Rock"), includes lead vocalist Phillip Daniel (Philly Ocean), drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).

The band's 2023-released Seas the Day EP include fan favorites such as Boz Scaggs' "Lido Shuffle," Ace's "How Long," Robbie Dupree's "Steal Away," the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love," and all-time Yacht Rock pioneer Christopher Cross' "Ride Like the Wind." Other songs in the band's exhilarating live sets include Toto's "Africa," Looking Glass' "Brandy," and Rupert Holmes' "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)."

Seas the Day was produced and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Chris Lord-Alge (Stevie Nicks, Keith Urban, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day), and it features the band's first original song "Sex on the Beach," accompanied by a video with a guest appearance by Access Hollywood and iHeart Radio host, Mario Lopez. The video was directed by Myles Erfurth (Dead Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Twiztid)

For the uninitiated, Yacht Rock encapsulates the revival of soft rock and Top 40 hits from the late '70s to the early '80s — and it has become an undisputed nationwide phenomenon, inspiring fans to dress the part and sing along.

Yachtley Crew have appeared on HBO's Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live, helped ring in the New Year on KLAS and KTLA's "Las Vegas Countdown to 2023" (the exclusive, Emmy-winning special syndicated program that reached more than 16.5 million U.S. TV households), performed on countless morning television and radio shows throughout the country, been featured on Fox News nationally, and performed on SiriusXM's Yacht Rock Radio "Yacht Rock 311" show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the satellite radio studio and have performed at a cadre of charity and special events throughout the years including the Mario Lopez Golf Classic Tournament in support of the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Yachtley Crew  recently released their first holiday EP Seas and Greetings on Earache Records, featuring the single "It's Christmastime" that went Top 40 on the Billboard AC charts and Top 30 on the Billboard holiday charts. Yachtley Crew have also recorded a new song by Diane Warren that wil be included in their forthcoming album, set for release in 2025.

Yachtley Crew is managed by longtime industry icon Andy Gould (Rob Zombie, Pantera, Lionel Richie, Guns N' Roses), and are represented by Jim Lenz at TKO.

Yachtley Crew are proud to fly the flag of Yacht Rock for each and every generation that loves good fun and good-time music, and they very much look forward to sharing new and classic Yacht Rock tunes and are set to a help one and all navigate the as-yet-uncharted waters of 2025, and beyond.

English Beat / Dave Wakeling Biography:

The English Beat's Website

The English Beat's Youtube

The English Beat's Spotify

The English Beat's Apple Music

The English Beat is a band with an energetic mix of musical styles and a sound like no other. The band's unique sound has allowed it to endure for nearly four decades and appeal to fans, young and old, all over the world.

When The English Beat (known as The Beat in their native England) rushed on to the music scene in 1979, it was a time of massive social and political unrest and economic and musical upheaval. This set the stage for a period of unbridled musical creativity, and thanks in large part to the Punk movement and it's DIY approach to making music, artists like The Beat were able to speak out and speak their mind on the news of the day, as in “Stand Down Margaret”, things that mattered to them and the youth culture, as in “Get A Job”, and universal matters of the heart and soul, as in their classic hits “I Confess” and “Save It For Later”.

The Beat first came to prominence as founding members of the British Two Tone Ska movement, with their classic first album “Just Can't Stop It” fitting squarely in that genre. Along with their contemporaries The Specials, The Selecter, and Madness, the band became an overnight sensation and one of the most popular and influential bands of that movement.

However, band leader Dave Wakeling never felt constrained by the movement. The band crossed over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. The band's sound continued to evolve over their three studio albums, through the General Public era (a band formed by Dave with The Beat’s toaster, Ranking Roger), and it has continued its evolution with the forthcoming English Beat album “Here We Go Love”, a PledgeMusic crowd-funded album set for a 2016 release, the band's first new album since 1982's “Special Beat Service”.

Consummate showman that he is, Dave Wakeling continues to keep The Beat alive and strong, touring the world as The English Beat with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing all the hits of The Beat, General Public, and songs from his new album “Here We Go Love”.

Graham will be joined on stage by Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals), Adam Minkoff (bass, drums, guitars, and vocals), and Zach Djanikian (guitars, mandolin, drums, and vocals), performing favorites from across his sixty-year career.

About Graham Nash

Legendary artist Graham Nash, as a founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash, is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. He has seen rock history unfold at some of its seminal moments – from the launch of the British Invasion to the birth of the Laurel Canyon movement a year later. An extraordinary Grammy Award® winning renaissance artist – and self-described “simple man” – Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with CSN and his work as a solo artist.

Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career, stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of our lives for nearly six decades.

Nash’s remarkable body of work began with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68, including “Stop Stop Stop,” and “On A Carousel,” among others.

The classic union of Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) yielded songs that are lightning rods embedded in our DNA, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs” and “Lady of the Island,” from the first Crosby, Stills & Nash LP and his iconic “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” from CSNY’s Déjà Vu.

Nash’s career as a solo artist took flight in 1971, beginning with two landmark albums, Songs For Beginners and Wild Tales which further showcased the depths of his abilities as a singer and songwriter, yielding such favorites as “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness”. His latest effort, “Now”, was released worldwide in May 2023.

Howie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into uttering, high registers, but also grates with real, pleading grit,” as one critic put it. A native of Bangor, Maine, Day began playing piano at age ve and guitar at age 12. By 15, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school, Day became a xture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote, nanced and released his rst effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30,000 copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft. After signing with Epic Records, Day released his major-label debut, Stop All The World Now, and hit the road to support it. Since the release of this ground breaking album 20years ago, featuring 4x platinum single "Collide", Howie Day continues to astound audiences with his everlasting music. Two additional studio albums (Sound The Alarm, Lanterns) and his incredible live show will no doubt cultivate life changing and poignant moments for people around the world for many years to come.

The Terrapin Family Band's Spotify

Using the Grateful Dead songbook as a springboard for reinterpretation and as inspiration to create original material, the musicians in the Terrapin Family Band are inspired as much by one another as they were by the diverse group of influences that they brought to the table. As a result, the music conveys friendship, respect, warmth, spontaneous conversation and companionship for listeners and performers alike. Originally formed from shows at Phil Lesh's Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, in 2012, the Terrapin Family Band began as the venue's official house band. Terrapin Crossroads' constant shows, often featuring Phil, created an opportunity for the musicians of Terrapin Crossroads to perform together and with a diverse cast of visiting musicians. Through playing in this setting, the band grew into a richly nuanced and fun group, weaving the classics with obscure covers and fresh original music to create a unique musical tapestry. The band went through many editions throughout the years, but always lay on the foundation of Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Alex Koford, & Jason Crosby. Around their prolific individual musical output, they would always come back together as members of the TFB. Beginning at the Brooklyn Bowl in late 2013 the band often featured Eric Krasno, as a guest, a friend, and now as a member of the band. A communal bond brought the band members back together in 2022 - a real need to make music together again. Over time, the group’s music has developed organically, merging and fusing each musician’s influences into a hard-charging sound rooted in the communal/collective, telepathic, exploratory spirit of the Grateful Dead. This is a new twist on the band, and we are excited to see where it takes us. What began as a house band for Phil’s Terrapin Crossroads has turned into something much more, and we're excited to take the unique Terrapin Family Band sound into this next era as they explore new musical grounds.

During his years as lead singer and main songwriter of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips helped to create the band’s elegant folk/pop sound with honest, introspective lyrics that forged a close bond with their fans. When Toad went on hiatus, Glen launched a solo career with his album Abulum, and stayed busy collaborating with other artists on various projects including Mutual Admiration Society, with members of Nickel Creek and Remote Tree Children, an experimental outing with John Morgan Askew.

“Until recently, I’ve seldom stayed in one place for very long,” Phillips says, explaining the genesis of his new album, THERE IS SO MUCH HERE. “I was lucky during the COVID lockdown to move in with my girlfriend, now wife, and to be home for the longest stretch I’ve had since the birth of my daughter, 20 years ago. I began noticing the little things. After a life of travel and seeking out peak experiences, I began to appreciate sitting still, watching the paint dry and loving it.

“I’ve been playing a songwriting game with Texas folk singer Matt The Electrician, for about ten years. Every Friday, he sends out a title. We have a week to write a song that includes it. The process allows me to write songs I wouldn’t write on my own. I’m always surprised at what comes out.”

“When my friend John [Morgan Askew] invited me to come up to his studio and make music, I said, ‘Yes’, as I collected a bunch of the new songs and headed up to Bocce Studios, in Vancouver, WA. John invited drummer Ji Tanzer and bass player/multi-instrumentalist Dave Depper along. When we started playing, I wasn’t sure we were aiming for, but as the process unfolded, the songs began to make sense together.”

Phillips’ previous solo record, SWALLOWED BY THE NEW, was about grief, a post-divorce outing while THERE IS SO MUCH HERE finds Phillips writing love songs again focusing on gratitude, beauty and staying present. “With this batch of songs, I noticed I was writing hopeful music again. I’d turned the corner and was more interested in curiosity and play than I was in gazing at my navel. I was finally in a state of being that wasn’t about grief and loss. Things felt doable and even exciting again.”

“As I sat still during the lockdown, I realized how much is always here – in the space around me, in the sensations of my body, in the sounds and smells and tastes and thoughts that emerge and drift away. It’s not a new concept, but it is a novel experience when you’ve spent your life running from one thing to another.”

Ultimately, as Phillips reflects on the album, he shares: “This is an album about showing up for what is and letting it be enough.”

Creativity is like a fire in a fireplace: You have to tend it or it will go out. For nearly two decades, Matisyahu has kept his creative spirit aflame by evolving his sound, melding genres, and testing the limits of the musical traditions that have inspired him. His latest release, Hold The Fire, and its leadoff single “Fireproof” takes inspiration from a fire dream inspired by Matisyahu's Old Testament religion, which has meant so much to his spiritual and creative life since his recording career began in 2004 and his breakout track "King Without a Crown" blasted into the Billboard charts in 2005. In a roundabout
way, those same Old Testament roots springboarded Matisyahu's music career.
Growing up outside New York City, the young Matthew Miller followed jam bands like
Phish and the Grateful Dead. Then, in Bob Marley and reggae, he found that the
messaging of Rastafarianism was sourced in part from that same Old Testament. The
sound that emerged on his first albums—including his first two studio releases as well
as 2005's Gold-certified Live at Stubb's—embraced both the spirit of reggae and his
spirituality and roots in Judaism. Buoyed by hits like "King Without a Crown," albums like
the Grammy-nominated and Billboard No.1-ranked Youth in 2006, and the Gold-certified

2009 antiwar hit "One Day" (streamed over 150 million times on Spotify alone), he toured extensively through the second half of the aughts with a high-energy stage show that has since grown to include more improvisation. All the while his music expanded into a shapeshifting collision of reggae, hip-hop, alt rock and boldly inventive pop. Today, he continues to be inspired by evolving musical trends, finding linkages and loops between eras and genres. Matisyahu's spirituality has evolved in parallel with his music, though his Jewish heritage remains a central theme throughout his life and music. The new EP, Hold The Fire (out February 2024), also finds him reflecting on celebrity and artistic success. For Matisyahu, “the unbelievable and miraculous feeling of being connected to our people” is what keeps the creative fire alight.

About the Show and the Artist:

Doors 7:00 PM // Music 8:00 PM

Americana and roots singer-songwriter Jackie Greene is a jack-of-all-trades, and an artist who can croon over soulful piano ballads as much as he can shred a bluesy guitar solo (like he did as the lead guitarist for The Black Crowes in 2013). A road warrior and musician's musician, Greene's new EP 'The Modern Lives - Vol 2' (out October 2018 on Blue Rose Music) finds him at a new chapter in his life: his first months of fatherhood, time off his relentless touring circuit, and a cross-country move from Brooklyn to his birthplace of Northern California. This new collection of six original songs is a thematic extension of 'The Modern Lives - Vol 1' EP (released in 2017 on Blue Rose Music), imbued with a Brooklyn basement DIY feel and ethos. He is a student of American music, transfixed upon its progression through time, as well as how regional sounds fit in a contemporary context. Whereas 'Vol 1' saw Greene experiment with the Delta blues as a canvas for his examinations of modern society, 'Vol 2' sees Greene embrace the sounds of the bluegrass and folk tapes of his youth.

Lead single "Crazy Comes Easy" showcases Greene's dynamic, multi-instrumental range as he plays slide guitar, organ, bass, and percussion, the guitar licks an appreciative nod to his time in The Black Crowes. Meanwhile, "Good Old Bad Times" highlights Greene as the songwriter as he rattles off lines like "How can somebody find a future? / If they ain't got a foothold in the past?" while taking a critical eye to the idea of nostalgia. Piano ballad "Victim Of The Crime" was one of Jackie's oldest demos up until the feel of these sessions gave him the tools to finish a song that, in his words, was written for his wife before she was his wife. While the title possesses a kind of melodrama, the song itself is tender and heartfelt as he details love's trials and tribulations. Greene partnered with Academy Award-nominated "king of indie animation" Bill Plympton for a series of music videos for 'The Modern Lives - Vol 1' that would eventually become an animated short film titled 'The Modern Lives'. The film is currently making the rounds at film festivals where it has already won the Jury Award at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, TX, and the Grand Remi Award / Best in Show at WorldFest in Houstin, TX. The short is also being exhibited at the 71st Festival de Cannes/Court Metrage, Melbourne International Animation Festival, and ASIFA- East Festival, amongst others.

Since the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album 'Gone Wanderin’', Greene has built an enduring audience through a relentless touring schedule with the likes of BB King, Mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, and Taj Mahal. He played lead guitar with The Black Crowes on their Layin’ Down With #13 World Tour, recorded and toured with Trigger Hippy - his supergroup with Joan Osborne - and in the last four years performed over 300 shows of his own, all while continuing to record and release his solo work. Greene is a frequent member of Phil Lesh & Friends, and sits in with countless other artists including Tedeschi Trucks Band, Govt Mule, Mississippi All-Stars, Amy Helm, Steve Earle, and Bob Weir.

Washington DC’s Oh He Dead brings their funky, poppy rock vibes wherever they go. Led by CJ Bowlin’ Johnson and her golden pipes, the five-piece group includes lead guitarist Alex Salser, John Daise-on-the-bass (say it outloud), Adam Ashforth on drums, and ViRG on keys.  The close-knit crew is known for their contagious joy, and for putting on a hell of a live show as  Johnson “maneuvers her powerful voice — a combination of Stevie Nicks and Tracy Chapman” (Kojo Nnamdi) in rhythm with the band’s “sublime instrumentation” (NPR) and “infectious and soulful sound” (Washington Post).  Their third album, Ugly is out this spring.

Formed by Merrill Garbus in 2006, Tune-Yards has become a name synonymous with creativity and forward motion. Known for explosive performances, surprising song structures, and danceable rhythms, their music also highlights connections between song and social consciousness. The New York Times praised their debut album, BiRd-BrAiNs, as “a confident do-it-yourselfer’s opening salvo,” and relentless touring established Garbus as a commanding live performer.

Garbus stepped into the producer role with 2011’s w h o k i l l, a bold and sonically inventive album that earned critical acclaim, including the #1 spot on The Village Voice’s Pazz and Jop poll. By 2021’s sketchy., Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner had solidified their partnership, creating a fully collaborative work. The duo has announced their sixth studio record, Better Dreaming, to be released on May 14, 2025 on 4AD.

Midnight North

“Wanderer shine on high/Brightest star in the midnight sky/Swing down low, the night so black/Ace of diamonds in the zodiac” “Jupiter” (lyrics by Robert Hunter)

Midnight North takes its cue from the fertile Bay Area music scene. Formed in early 2012 by singer/songwriters Grahame Lesh and Elliott Peck, whose harmonies came as naturally as the initial songs, along with bassist Connor O’Sullivan. The band’s current-day lineup was completed when drummer/banjo player Nathan Graham came aboard after a chance meeting at a benefit concert in Philadelphia in 2016 following the release of its third, and breakthrough, album, Under the Lights, in 2017. In the early days, the group was able to grow as a unit thanks to an association with Lesh’s family venue, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California.

Diamonds in the Zodiac - on the Americana Vibes label - is Midnight North’s fifth studio album (along with three live discs), representing a continuation of the musical direction on 2021’s There’s Always a Story. The title comes from the unearthed Robert Hunter lyrics for “Jupiter,” one of two extended tracks on an album -- the other, Grahame’s opening “Questions.” Other than those two, Diamonds is increasingly song-oriented and steeped in bluegrass, country, soul, blues, funk, jazz and gospel – a true Americana melting pot.

It also turned into a real, second-generation family affair, as it was produced by the band’s dear friend Amy Helm, daughter of The Band’s Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus, and features Grahame’s dad Phil and brother Brian. “Things have come full circle in that it was meeting Amy and Levon Helm at a Ramble in the Barn that gave my parents the inspiration to open Terrapin Crossroads, and having Terrapin was so instrumental in the band’s development. And now Amy produced this album and shepherded these songs to their ultimate form,” said Grahame.

Diamonds was mixed by D. James Goodwin, who has worked with such luminaries as Bob Weir, the Hold Steady, The National, Goose, and Bonny Light Horseman among many others. Micah Nelson, aka Particle Kid, and Willie’s son, did the honors on the album cover artwork, using acrylic paint mixed with floetrol poured on wood.

Recorded at Dave Schools’ (Widespread Panic) Spacecamp in Occidental, California, Diamond in the Zodiac’s 10 tracks represent a truly collaborative effort, featuring band members playing different instruments and many friends & collaborators stopping by the studio to contribute to the music and the vibe. Phil & Brian Lesh, Jason Crosby, and TJ Kanczuzewski all contributed significant moments, and all of the focus was on pulling the best version of the song out of the ensemble.

“What’s unique about this band is we have two lead writers in Grahame and I, with very different approaches,” says Elliott. “I’ve always been more in the singer/songwriter mold, while Grahame comes from the jam band ethos of extending things. I feel Grahame has really evolved as a songwriter on this record, where a song like ‘Questions’ is more lyrically driven.”

Grahame acknowledges taking his cues on the track from listening to the audiobook of Jeff Tweedy’s “How to Write One Song” in writing “Questions.” “Elliott recommended it to me during the pandemic, and that’s the song that came out of it. His idea in the book was just to start and finish one song and not worry about a whole repertoire.”

Elliott based the piano-driven “The Colors Here,” the first single – which features Phil Lesh on bass, Jason Crosby on violin, and producer Amy Helm on harmony vocals – on memories of tornadoes in her Midwest Chicago childhood along with the Judy Garland movie of Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz,” where the screen goes from black-and-white to technicolor when Dorothy finds she’s not in Kansas anymore.

“It’s all about how suffering through a major tragedy can open the door to your salvation,” explains Elliott. “You can find beauty on the other side. There’s always hope.”

Grahame acknowledges the influence of Grateful Dead albums like Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty on his “Back to California,” another early track which has the warm country flavor of the Allman Brothers’ “Sweet Melissa.” “Back to California” features backing vocals from the entire choir of the band and extended family of musicians who were at the studio that day, including Phil Lesh, Amy Helm, and touring keyboard player TJ Kanczuzewski. The song first appeared in a very different form on Under the Lights.

“The Under the Lights album was written right after the first time we’d been out in the world as a band on tour,” says Grahame. “It felt like we could claim some of that classic rock and roll imagery of troubadours on the road eating up the miles. Even though it’s a younger me who wrote those lyrics, they seem to fit the themes of this record too. We changed the key and updated the feel, and it feels like it finally fits musically with where the band is now. It has become one of my favorite songs to play live, and I’m thrilled that this version is on the record.”

Nathan’s “Walk the Runway” offers an East Coast perspective. It’s a story about falling in love with the bartender at an unnamed New York haunt, revealed by the band to be Fanelli’s “at the corner of Prince.” “Old Country”, written by Brian Lesh and featuring his harmony vocals and mandolin playing, is a folk song in which he asks, “Won’t you see me sitting there/Grinning at the moon?” under Nathan & Connor’s driving country groove.

Other musical flavors include the funky “Round & Round”, with Jason Crosby tickling the ivories and Connor’s driving funk bassline pushing the action (and which Elliott co-wrote with Grahame while jamming on her ‘70s Wurlitzer), and the plaintive “In the Sunrise,” in which Elliott shows off her vocals – equal parts Janis Joplin’s primal scream, Bonnie Raitt’s soulful ache and Brandi Carlile’s naked vulnerability.

The epic centerpiece of the album, and the piece de resistance for Deadheads, is undoubtedly “Jupiter” – featuring Phil on bass and Brian on harmony vocals – which harks back to Phil Lesh & Friends’ “Planet Jams” of some 20 years ago, the Quintet with guitarists Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring, keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummer John Molo.

“I grew up watching that lineup in my early teens through high school, when that band was really cooking,” said Grahame. “They often wrote with Bob [Hunter] at the time for the Phil & Friends album There & Back Again and other projects, and the lyrics to ‘Jupiter’ come from that time. My dad never put the lyrics to the music he wrote, and at some point passed them along to me, and a few years ago I wrote music to the lyrics. I didn’t change any of the words.”

“Hunter very much meant for the words to speak for themselves,” says Grahame. “I always think of the clip from the Long Strange Trip movie where they asked him to explain the lyrics to ‘Dark Star’, and he responded by reciting the lyrics and then saying, ‘what is unclear about that? I mean, it says what it means.’”

With its top-flight pedigree, Midnight North is intent on carrying the torch for this distinctly American music from one generation to the next. “Songlines” sums up the idea of a group of individuals putting their unique experiences into the common thread of music. Elliott and Amy join their voices together, singing, “Pass the lyric down to a troubled heart/A broken choir sings to light up the dark.”

“It’s a generational thing,” acknowledges Grahame. “It’s about what’s passed down to us and what we pass on. The verses are about different people in the dark needing the light, and that’s where they get it, from families and friends.”

Elliott’s “A Great Farewell” brings the album to a suitable close. It’s about starting over, trying new things, but never forgetting what got us here in the first place. “I guess we’ll repeat the same mistakes/Knowing nothing’s going to change,” she sings, adding, “There’s a light out there/If we’re open to the spark.”

Diamonds in the Zodiac shows not even the sky is the limit for Midnight North.

“The songs and the community are the pillars holding this up,” says Lesh, who has toured with his father as a member of Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Family Band and Phil Lesh & Friends. “We’re so thankful to be part of this scene. This music is timeless.”

“I’m deeply grateful for the life I have,” says Colin Hay, “and I think my natural tendency has always been towards optimism and humor. Lately, though, I’ve had to be more intentional about it. I’ve had to actively seek out the positive, to let new rays of hope shine on some seemingly dark situations.”

That’s precisely what Hay does with his extraordinary new solo album, Now And The Evermore, facing down struggle, loss, and even his own mortality with grit and wit at every turn. Written and recorded in Hay’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles, the collection is a defiantly joyful celebration of life and love, one that insists on finding silver linings and reasons to smile. That’s not to say the record deludes itself about the realities of our modern world, but rather that it consistently chooses to respond to pain with beauty and doubt with wonder.

The music on Now And The Evermore (Lazy Eye/Compass Records) is vibrant and animated, brimming with fanciful melodies, lush orchestration, and even a guest appearance from Ringo Starr, who kicks the whole thing off with a signature drum fill. Hay’s performances are likewise buoyant and full of life, drawing on vintage pop charm, pub rock muscle, and folk sincerity to forge a sound that’s at once playful and profound, clever and compassionate, whimsical and earnest. At its most basic level, Now And The Evermore offers a deeply personal acknowledgement of the relentless march of time, but zoom out and you’ll see that Hay’s contemplations of identity and eternity are in fact broader reflections on our shared humanity, on letting go of dead weight and reaching for the light no matter how dark things may get.

“It’s a troubling and confounding and ever-inspiring world that we live in,” he muses. “I’m lucky to be able to wander downstairs and try to make some sense of it, at least to myself.”

Born in Scotland, Hay moved with his family as a teenager to Australia, where he first came to international fame with seminal ’80s hitmakers Men At Work. While the band would reach the heights of stardom—they took home a GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist and sold more than 30 million records worldwide on the strength of #1 singles like “Who Can It Be Now?” and “Down Under”—by 1985, they’d called it quits and gone their separate ways. Hay released his solo debut the following year and, over the course of the next three-and-a-half decades, went on to record twelve more critically acclaimed studio albums that would help establish him as one of his generation’s most hardworking and reliable craftsmen. Rolling Stone praised his “witty, hooky pop” tunes, while NPR’s World Café lauded his “distinctive voice,” and late night hosts from David Letterman and Craig Ferguson to Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel have all welcomed him for performances.

Over the course of his remarkable solo career, Hay developed a reputation as a gifted raconteur with serious comedy chops, and his frequent appearances at LA’s Largo club helped garner him a legion of fans in the entertainment world. Among them was actor/director Zach Braff, who called Hay’s mix of heartfelt songwriting and hilarious storytelling “one of the most amazing things I had ever seen.” Braff would go on to feature Hay’s music prominently in the GRAMMY-winning soundtrack for Garden State and invite him to appear as himself on the hit series Scrubs, which helped introduce his music to a whole new generation of listeners.

On top of his rigorous schedule as a solo artist, Hay has also managed to tour the world several times over with Ringo Starr & His All–Star Band, release an audiobook of Aesop’s Fables, star in the award-winning documentary Waiting For My Real Life, and even provide the voice for Fergus Flamingo in Disney’s The Wild.

“When the pandemic hit, I was forced to stay put for the first time in years,” Hay recalls. “It was horrendous every day to watch the news and see so many people struggling, but even so, musical ideas were creeping into my head, so I followed where they led and embraced the freedom that came with sitting still for a change.”

With no tour dates on the horizon, Hay allowed himself to slow things down and work at a different pace than he was used to. For the first time in his career, he had several uninterrupted months to work continuously with his longtime friend and collaborator Michael Georgiades, and the two began penning a series of gorgeous, thoughtful tracks that would eventually form the framework of Now And The Evermore.

“It seemed like we tapped into some kind of creative vein that just felt good,” Hay explains. “Even when I thought we had enough material for a record, I just kept writing on my own because the songs kept presenting themselves to me.”

Hay took his time in the studio, too, going in alone at first to record basic tracks and then building up the tunes up around his core vocal and guitar performances. While he enlisted a handful of collaborators—including Georgiades, Compass Records co–founder/bassist Garry West, Cuban guitarist/tres master San Miguel Perez, wife and singer/songwriter Cecilia Noël, and drummer Greg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, David Lee Roth)—Hay tackled the majority of the work on his own until it was time to bring in keyboardist and string arranger Fred Kron, who helped flesh out the music with sweeping orchestration, which was recorded and produced by West at the Compass studio in Nashville.

“Once we started to put the strings on it, that’s when it felt like everything really came together,” says Hay. “There started to be this sense of beauty and grandeur to the music, this sense of romance and possibility.”

That romance and possibility lays at the heart of Now And The Evermore, which opens with the bittersweet title track. Lilting and jaunty, the song (which features Starr on drums) makes peace with life’s transience, accepting the fate that ultimately awaits us all and committing to make the most of what little time we’ve got. “Goodbye to the life we knew / Don’t save it till the end,” Hay sings, balancing faith and fatalism in equal measure. “It could be me, it could be you / Or some old long lost friend.”

“I think this pandemic made people recognize that we won’t be around forever,” he explains. “If there’s something you want to say to someone, some love you want to express, then you should do it now because you never know when your number’s up.”

Learning to live in the present is a recurring theme on the album. The sunny “Love Is Everywhere” mixes rootsy guitars and gospel harmonies as it reminds us that there’s always joy and gratitude to be found if we’re willing to seek it out, while the soaring “Into The Bright Lights” (written by Chris Trapper) waltzes its way to cinematic heights as it refuses to surrender to darkness and despair, and the playful “Sea Of Always” tips its cap to Roy Orbison and The Beatles as it casts away the trappings and distractions that all too often drag us down. “Sold my rings / Cut the strings / And said goodbye to sorrow,” Hay sings. “Close my eyes as I fly / A different sky to follow.”

“A lot of these songs involve different ways of thinking about the unknowable,” he reflects. “I find solace in nature and I often reach for those sorts of metaphors—the sea, the sky, mountains, rivers—when I’m trying to wrap my head around it all.”

Indeed, the unknowable looms large on the record. The loss of Hay’s parents informs the mesmerizing “Starfish and Unicorns,” which wrestles with the lingering pain and loneliness that comes with the end of a complicated relationship, as well as the Celtic-tinged “All I See Is You,” which chases after a past it can never get back. The deceptively breezy melody of “Agatha Bell,” meanwhile, disguises an eerie murder ballad that raises more questions than it answers, and the bright, punchy horns of “A Man Without A Name” wraps the never-ending search for self in an air of celebration. But it’s perhaps the album closer “When Does The End Begin?” that confronts the unknowable most directly, with Hay singing, “We’re following the rising moon / When darkness falls it will be none too soon / We’re passing all the loved and lost / Don’t want to look back and count the cost.”

“I’m approaching 70 now,” he explains, “and it’s clear to me that I’m in the home stretch. I don’t feel any fear or a resignation about it, though, just an urgency to say the things I need to say and do the things I need to do.”

Who knows what happens when we die? Perhaps our consciousness lingers on long after we leave our bodies. Perhaps the curtains simply close and the show ends for good. Regardless, Now And The Evermore reminds us that we’re all alive right here, right now. For Colin Hay, that’s plenty to smile about.
